The Vitamin You Absorb Worse Every Year

Blaise Akwuaka

How age turns B12 from an intake question into an absorption one, and what that shift does to signal timing and brain volume.

Guy I worked with last spring. Fifty-eight, eats cleaner than I do, in the gym three days a week.

He tells me his feet have been going numb at night. And he keeps losing words halfway through a sentence.

His diet was not the problem. His plate was full of B12.

He just was not getting it out of the food.

Vitamin B12 does two jobs that decide how fast you think.

The first is myelin, the insulation wrapped around every nerve fiber you own.

Strip insulation off a wire and the signal still travels. It travels slow and sloppy.

That is what a long B12 shortfall does to a nervous system. Timing smears, and the man inside it says he feels a half step behind all day.

I told you so. $10,000 became $131,000 in two years. Here is what is next.

Right now, you can buy a dollar's worth of gold for about 36 cents.

That sounds impossible. Here's how it's real.

The major gold miners are throwing off record cash flow — even after gold's recent pullback. The four largest have never had this much free cash on hand. Ever. At today's gold price, they're running margins as high as 75% — the most profitable they have ever been.

Which hands them a problem.

Go here to see the problem — and why the majors are about to go on a shopping spree for the ages.

When a major gold miner makes record profits, it does one of two things: hand the cash back to shareholders, or buy the best junior mining assets to secure future production.

And here's the piece the market is missing:

The best junior assets are still priced as if gold were stuck at $1,800 an ounce — not north of $4,000, where it trades today.

So the majors are staring at their own future production shrinking, sitting on record cash, looking at top-tier junior assets trading at a fraction of what that gold is worth at today's price.

They don't have a choice. They buy — or their output keeps shrinking until they're out of business.

That's how you buy a dollar of gold for 36 cents: you own the junior before the major is forced to pay up for it.

The gap between what these assets are worth and what they trade for has a name. I call it the Golden Anomaly. It only appears early in a gold bull market, and it closes fast — usually the moment the majors start writing cheques.

So you can pay full price after the gap closes…

Or buy the dollar for 36 cents while the Anomaly still exists.

My name is Garrett Goggin, CFA, CMT, and it's why Porter Stansberry recently called me:

"THE most knowledgeable gold investor in the world."

Go here to see my Golden Anomaly portfolio — and the three names next on the majors' shopping list.

The second job is cleanup. Your body produces a compound called homocysteine every hour of every day, ordinary metabolic exhaust.

B12 and folate are the crew that clears it out. Run short and it stacks up in your blood.

Term of the Day

Homocysteine

Metabolic exhaust that B vitamins sweep out of your blood, and one of the few numbers that tracks how fast your brain is losing volume.

Oxford ran a trial on this in 2010. Older adults with memory complaints, two years, B12 and folate and B6 against a placebo.

The brains on B vitamins shrank about 30 percent slower. In the people who started with the highest homocysteine, the rate was cut by more than half.

Now, the reason this sneaks up on men your age.

B12 is the one nutrient your body gets worse at absorbing for no reason other than birthdays.

Pulling B12 out of food takes real stomach acid to break it loose, then a carrier protein your stomach lining makes to walk it across. Both fade as you get older.

Roughly one in five adults past 60 shows an abnormal reading on at least one B12 marker. Add a daily acid blocker or long-term metformin, both known to cut B12 absorption, and the door narrows further.

So he eats the steak. The B12 rides through him and leaves.

This is not a diet problem. It is a delivery problem, and clean eating does not open a door that will not open.

Which is exactly why form matters here. B12 from a supplement runs about 50 percent more available than B12 locked inside food, because it skips the part of the handoff that is failing.

A good B-complex covers the folate side of the same cleanup job. This is one where the form and the dose are worth actually reading.

And get the number. B12 and homocysteine, next blood draw, ask for both by name, because nobody runs them unless you do.

Under 10 on homocysteine is where you want to sit. Plenty of labs will call 14 normal and never mention it again.

One straight word before you go. Do not sit on numb hands or feet for a year, because nerve damage from a long deficiency does not always come all the way back, and that is a conversation for your doctor.

One Thing

Put B12 and homocysteine on the list for your next blood draw. Type it into your phone before you close this.

You have decades of work in front of you, and every hour of it runs through a nervous system that needs one vitamin to stay insulated.

The name you reached for in the meeting. The pause before your daughter's friend's name.

Some of that is not the calendar. Some of it is a supply line with a closed door at the front of it.

That is a lab slip and thirty seconds of asking. Cheapest thing you will ever do for the asset that pays for all the others.
