The Cardio Your Knees Never Notice

Blaise Akwuaka

How passive heat loads the cardiovascular system while the joints sit out, and what twenty years of Finnish follow-up found in the men who used it most.

You think the sauna is what you do after the work.

It is the work. Your body cannot tell the difference.

Sit in a room at 175 degrees and your core temperature climbs a degree or two. Your heart does not ask your permission about what happens next.

It speeds up. In a normal session a man's heart rate runs somewhere between 100 and 150 beats a minute, which is the same neighborhood as moderate cardio.

Blood gets pushed out toward the skin to dump heat. The heart has to move more volume per beat to keep the middle of you supplied.

Do that for a couple of weeks and your plasma volume expands. More fluid in the system, more blood delivered per beat, less strain to move it.

Vision Test: how many circles can you see?

Which is the last circle you can see?

▸  I can see all 5

▸  I lose it at #4

▸  I lose it at #3 or sooner

This isn’t about how small you can read.

It’s about contrast… and contrast is the first thing to fade when the vessels behind your eyes start collapsing.

You lose the faint stuff first. Headlights bleeding at night. Faces going flat in dim rooms. Then it creeps inward.

A breakthrough discovery from Harvard found a way to reopen those vessels in only 8 seconds a morning.

See what your circle result means

P.S. Most people score worse than they expect on this one and most have no idea their contrast was slipping until they tried. The good news is that this can now be fixed in only 8 seconds each morning

That is a training effect. Your knees, your lower back, and that shoulder that has not been right since 2011 were not consulted either.

What makes this more than a comfortable theory is the follow-up. Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland tracked about 2,300 middle-aged men for two decades, including how often they sat in a sauna.

The men in there four to seven times a week had roughly 60 percent fewer sudden cardiac deaths than the men going once a week. Then, in 2017, the same group published what they found in those men's brains.

The frequent users had about a 66 percent lower rate of dementia diagnosis over the follow-up. Observational, so nobody gets to call it proof.

But 2,300 men over twenty years is not noise either. And the reason it makes sense is the part most guys never put together.

The vessels feeding your heart and the vessels feeding your brain are the same plumbing. Same living tissue, same pressure, same wear.

Train one and you are working on the other. You do not get to protect the pump and ignore the pipes running north.

There is a second thing happening in the heat, and it has nothing to do with blood.

Term of the Day

Heat Shock Proteins

When a cell heats up, it manufactures a repair crew whose whole job is finding proteins that folded wrong and either fixing them or hauling them out.

Junked-up protein is one of the central stories of aging tissue, brain very much included. Heat is one of the few switches a regular man can flip that turns that crew on.

Now the part the sauna guys leave out. You will sweat half a liter or more in a session, and sweat is not water.

It is water plus sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Run this four times a week on plain water and you are quietly draining minerals while wondering why your calves cramp at 2am and your afternoons went flat.

That link in the chain is the one food often does not close on its own. A quality electrolyte or mineral product is doing actual work here, not decoration.

One more thing, and I mean it. Heat is a real cardiovascular load, which is the entire point of it.

If you have heart disease, blood pressure that is not under control, or medication that moves fluid around, run this by your doctor first. And no alcohol in there. Ever.

One Thing

Fifteen to twenty minutes, four days this week. Hydrated going in, minerals going back in after.

Here is the math for a man who thinks in returns. Twenty minutes, four times a week, no equipment, no technique to learn, no recovery cost to pay.

What it buys is a heart that moves blood more efficiently and a brain that keeps getting fed for another thirty years.

Show me the position in your portfolio with that risk profile.
