The Belly Fat That Eats Your Drive

Blaise Akwuaka

How the fat around your middle converts testosterone into estrogen, talks your brain into making less, and turns a flat drive and a growing waist into one loop.

Guy I train, fifty-one, runs a roofing company with forty people on payroll. Walked in last spring and said, "Coach, I just don't want anything anymore."

Not sad, just flat. No push at work, no push at home, and a gut that had crept over his belt about a notch a year for a decade.

He figured he had two problems. Age took the drive, dinner took the waistline.

He had one problem. And the gut was running it.

Most men think of belly fat as storage. A spare tire you haul up the stairs.

The deep fat behind your abdominal wall, the kind packed around your organs, is not storage. It is working tissue, and one of its jobs is chemistry.

Cover one eye. Does your vision get dimmer? (10-second vision test)

Cover your right eye with your hand.

Look at the bright square below.

Now switch and cover your left.

Did one side look dimmer? Yellower? A little washed out?

Which eye dimmed?

▸  The right eye looked dimmer

▸  The left eye looked dimmer

▸  They look exactly the same

▸  I’m not sure (show me the answer)

Most people swear both eyes see the same.

They don’t.

When the blood vessels feeding one eye start to collapse, that eye loses oxygen first… and the world quietly dims on that side before you’d ever catch it on a chart.

A 2026 breakthrough from a rogue eye doctor built this into an 8-second morning flush that reopens those vessels and 73,247 people have used it.

See what your dimmer eye is trying to tell you (and how to fix it)

Doctors call it visceral fat. It is the hard belly you can't pinch, not the soft stuff you can.

Term of the Day

Aromatase

An enzyme that converts testosterone into estradiol, a form of estrogen. Fat tissue carries it, and the more belly fat you have, the more of it is on shift.

So follow the chain. Your body makes testosterone, and the fat around your middle takes a cut and turns it into estrogen.

Less testosterone in the tank. More estrogen in the blood.

Then comes the link that floored me.

Your brain reads your estrogen level to decide how much testosterone to order. When estrogen climbs, the brain takes it as a sign the supply is fine and tells the plant to slow down.

Your belly skims your testosterone, then talks your brain into making less of it. Two hits, one source.

And it loops. Lower testosterone makes your body more willing to park fat right at the middle, which means more aromatase, which pulls testosterone down again.

That is not a willpower problem. It is a feedback loop, and loops do not break on their own.

Why does a man who cares about money care about any of this? Because testosterone was never a gym hormone.

It works hand in hand with dopamine, the chemical behind drive and appetite for the chase. When it runs low, it does not feel like a hormone problem.

It feels like the meeting where you had the better idea and didn't bother saying it. It feels like the 3pm slump you blame on the sandwich.

It feels like the deal you let walk because chasing it seemed like too much work. Every one of those has a price tag.

The factory also needs parts. Testosterone gets built from cholesterol, and that production line leans on zinc, vitamin D, and magnesium to run at full speed.

Research shows men running short on zinc or vitamin D tend to run lower testosterone too, and plenty of men over 45 are short on at least one. Food first, and a quality zinc, D, and magnesium formula where the plate comes up short, is a smart way to keep the line stocked.

Then attack the loop from the fat side. Lifting heavy and walking after dinner both go after visceral fat, and studies on men who lose weight keep finding testosterone climbing back as the waist comes in.

If your drive has been flat for months, ask your doctor for a morning blood test, total and free testosterone. Levels peak early in the day, so an afternoon draw can read low and tell you nothing.

One Thing

Tonight, wrap a tape measure around your waist at the belly button. Not where your belt sits, because your belt has been lying to you for years.

Forty inches is the line where health guidelines say risk starts climbing for men. Write the number down.

The roofer did it. He came in at forty-three, swore at the tape, and started walking after dinner the next night.

Last month he called me about buying a second truck. He wanted something again.

Find your number tonight. Your drive is sitting right behind it.
