Deep Sleep and Overnight Brain Clearance

Blaise Akwuaka

How the depth of a night's sleep, not its length, shapes how much the brain clears overnight and how clearly the next day runs.

You think sleep is your brain powering down for the night.

It is doing the opposite. One part of it clocks in for the hardest job of the day.

Here is what floored me when I first read the research. Your brain has a plumbing system that runs almost entirely while you are unconscious.

All day, that three-pound organ burns through fuel. It is two percent of your body weight and eats about twenty percent of your energy.

Burn that much fuel and you make waste. Metabolic junk piles up between your brain cells while you are awake, meeting, deciding, earning.

So when does it get cleared out?

At night. In deep sleep, specifically.

This Startup is Growing 23X Faster than Nvidia

See this official SEC document? On page 146 Elon Musk revealed the name of a startup that Jeff believes will be…

The next monster IPO on Wall Street. (Click here to get the details.)

Even though this has nothing to do with robots, self-driving cars, or rockets…

This startup is growing faster than Tesla… faster than SpaceX… and even 23 times faster than Nvidia.

That's why The Atlantic called it…

"The fastest-growing business in the history of capitalism." (Click here to get the name, 100% free of charge.)

Term of the Day

The Glymphatic System

It is your brain's drainage network, and researchers at the University of Rochester found it kicks into high gear during sleep, when the space between your brain cells opens up and fluid washes the waste out.

Think about that. The cleanup crew for the organ that makes your living does not come during the day.

It comes when you hit slow-wave sleep. The deep stuff.

Not the light dozing. The real bottom-of-the-pool sleep.

Most guys our age never connect the next part. That deep sleep is the first thing to go as you age.

You are not imagining it. Slow-wave sleep drops steadily from your thirties on, and by midlife a lot of men are getting a fraction of what they used to.

So the waste-clearing shift gets shorter every year, right when you have more on your plate than ever.

You wake up foggy and blame the alarm. Blame the coffee.

Blame Your Age

But you might have spent eight hours in bed and barely touched the sleep that actually cleans the machine.

Now run it to where you live. That brain is your first asset.

It is the thing that reads the room, closes the deal, remembers the name, sees the move three steps out. Every dollar you have made ran through it.

You would not run a business and skip maintenance on the one machine that prints the money. You are doing exactly that every night you shortchange deep sleep.

And getting into deep sleep is not just "go to bed earlier." Your brain has to drop through the gears, and that takes the right chemistry to settle the nervous system down.

Magnesium, glycine, the minerals that quiet the system so you can sink instead of hover.

Most men our age run low on the very things that help the body get there. That is a real gap, and it is worth a look at what supports it.

None of this is about sleeping more. It is about sleeping deeper.

One man I would point to a doctor: if you snore like a freight train or your wife says you stop breathing at night, that is a different conversation, and it is worth having.

For everyone else, tonight, do one thing. Kill the screen thirty minutes early and let your brain start dropping the gears on its own.

Because the fog is not the price of getting older. It is the bill for a cleaning shift you keep cutting short.

And the people who lean on that sharp version of you are counting on you to protect the asset.

Not the portfolio. The thing that built it.
